Upholstery ( tapisser) is an art
L'art de tapissier is like l'art d'aimer ,each day you learn something
For each style and each period , upholstery ( garniture ) is different.
First step ,to make a " garniture " you need your tools
you need horse hair, straps , "toile d'embourure" may be springs depend on the style of the chair ..
you need strenght and doigts de fée ( fairy fingers !!) and even when you are a woman you can have this strenght
And you need to practice and savoir faire
Well tomorrow post about which graniture ? on which chair ?
then you will learn how to choose the proper fabric or just the one you love ...For me there are no rules ..
Well all these steps will be teached in a class my dad is going to give at the end of the spring ...so if you are interested in it , contact me
........................................................................................
Tonight I'm going to the " Générale" (dress rehearsal ) in the Opera of Marseilles to listen to Jules Cesar ...May be I will bring back some pictures
What a wonderful class that would be to attend and I think it would be a very usefull skill to have.

what a beautiful metier d'art!! over here it's hard to find a true talented artist for classic upholstery!
i did it once with my dad, restoring an antique chair helping me with keeping the strings in their place!
the chair still stands in my home ;))and needs a new remake urgently yet i'm truly concerned about these springs again :((
would love to follow your dad's hand during the course though!

Oh what a wonderful thing to be able to do! There is an upholsterer's shop beside me on the corner of rue Malebranche and I gaze in the window longingly...

So interesting! I'd love to peak over your shoulder while you upholstered a chair. Thank goodness for your blog so I can do just that!

Gosh! This is skill I would love to have.
Here in Marrakech it's all divans. Quite hard to get a sofa that doesn't cost the earth or is amazingly garish.
By the way, I loved the toile fabrics in your side bar.
Greetings from Marrakech.
May I add you to my blog roll?
